Gucci Withdraws Polo Neck Sweater After Blackface Comparisons
Gucci pulls Polo Neck Sweater from its Fall/Winter 2018 collection. The black sweater, described as a “balaclava” knit, covers part of the face but revealing a large red mouth cut out in the center.
Twitter and Instagram users posted photographs of the jumper, with pointing to the fact it is Black History Month in the United States, and a backlash over the piece’s resemblance to racist blackface tropes.
The Italian brand removed the item from its website and apologised on Wednesday night. They claimed the statement on Twitter:”We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make. We are fully committed to increasing diversity throughout our organization.”
