The Brant Foundation To Launch New York Branch With Basquiat Exhibition
The Brant Foundation will celebrate the opening of a new space with a solo exhibition featuring works from Jean-Michel Basquiat. This will initiate the launch of the Foundation’s second branch (their first in New York). Founder Peter M. Brant curates the exhibition alongside Dr. Dieter Buchhart. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Fondation Louis Vuitton, will feature Basquiat’s masterworks from the Brant Collections, international museums, and private collections. Tickets can be reserved here.
Acquiring Basquiat’s work since the 1980s, Brant has assembled an astounding collection; featuring some of the artist’s most important works. In the Foundation’s announcement, Brant states, “Basquiat has been a cornerstone of the East Village art scene for decades, and to bring his work back to the neighborhood that inspired it is a great privilege. Our family is thrilled to launch The Brant Foundation’s New York space with an artist who is central to the collection, and above all to share his legacy with the community that was fundamental in shaping it.”
The space, located in New York City’s East Village, will be the second of the Foundation. Most recently, renowned artist Walter De Maria repurposed the building as his home and studio from the 1980s until his death in 2013. Richard Gluckman of Gluckman Tang Architects held the task of renovating the property, creating a 16,000-square-foot building which features 7,000 square feet of exhibition space across four floors. Two new gardens alongside the space accompany the renovations, as well as a landscaped roof terrace.
